England Team Analysis for EURO 2024

Gareth Southgate has plenty of young and experienced talent at his disposal. England reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and finals of EURO 2020 and will be hoping to get their hands on the trophy this time.

It is being predicted that Southgate will switch to 4-2-3-1 instead of a 3-5-2 with the availability of world class forwards and wing backs. He is blessed with a lot of attacking options and an abundance of quality right-backs.

To select a squad of 26 players for EUROs is a difficult task for the coach. England face Denmark, Slovenia and Serbia in Group C.

England EURO 2024 Lineup (Probable)

Goalkeeper

Jordan Pickford : Pickford has been one of England’s most reliable goalkeepers of this century since his introduction into the team. Although an injury has resisted Pickford to take up his place in the previous squad but he will be confident of retaining the No 1 shirt when World Cup rolls around. Another option would be Ramsdale. Ramsdale will surely come under consideration for a starting spot at EURO if he continues his impressive form.

Defenders

Marc Guehi : There was a time when Maguire was one constant in Southgate’s back three. However, the times have changed and Marc Guehi is new centre back for England at Euro 2024. He continues to be an aerial titan, particularly defensively, and will be key to England’s European hopes. It is most likely that Marc Guehi and Stones will be the two main centre backs. They are both excellent ball-players and seem to be Southgate’s first choice when the whole squad is fit.

John Stones/Joe Gomez : Stones has been known to be injury-prone in the past. This season he showed his class as he helped his team to more than 15 clean sheets. Along with Maguire, he can form a solid CB pairing that can lead his side to victory. His heading abilities during corners are similar to Maguire, making them a great defensive pairing. Joe Gomez seems a readymade replacement for John Stones, if he failed to perform.

Kyle Walker : Kyle Walker has enjoyed an excellent domestic campaign with Manchester City and is able to play as part of a back three or back four. He is a player who has earned the England manager’s trust because of his ability to flit between formations. The England EURO 2024 squad is blessed with an array of talent in that position, including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier. With our current option, two right backs can fit in the starting lineup.

Midfielders

Declan Rice : The midfielder is important to Southgate as he offers versatility, energy, creativity and goal threat. His hold-up play, as well as his pace on the counter-attacks, make him a lethal CDM. He can play on the left-wing as well as the right-wing, giving his manager another advantage. All in all, he is the one who can rack up the assists for his team in the EURO. The only problem is that he is more of an attacking midfielder and in the current position, Southgate will prefer a holding or defensive midfielder like Henderson or Declan Rice. Rice is part of the upcoming generation of English football and has played well for west ham and England. His attacking skills as a CDM make him such a versatile player.

Forwards

Jude Bellingham : Jude might be one of the first names on the sheet. He has impressed so much for the past season and will play a crucial role in England’s Euro campaign. He is dangerous through the middle. His next task would be to win England the Euros by continuing his blistering run of form. He has matured and improved on his game over the years. We have deployed him at the centre of the formation.

Harry Kane : England are blessed with a number of talented wingers but without Harry Kane they won’t be able to hurt opponents. The England’s captain is one of the best English strikers for quite some time and also won the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup. He has scored most goals and provided most number of assists in this season of Premier League. Despite his wonderful performances in the past decade, he has not been able to win a trophy. His dream of winning a trophy is likely to be complete with England rather than Spurs. He would be leading the attack of England World Cup 2022 squad.

Phil Foden : Phil Foden is just another forward star of England squad who has the ability to kill oppositions. He is still young and has a bright future ahead. Along with Saka, he would be hoping to cut inside the defenses and score the goals into the top corner. He also is a versatile player and can play at different attacking positions as well.

Bukayo Saka : Saka is just another option who can be deployed at right wing by Southgate. He is enjoying the best phase of his career with Arsenal and has been an integral part of his club. It would be a big surprise if he wasn’t in Southgate’s first XI, most likely on the right, although he has shown he can operate equally well from the left side.
