Shillong | Two persons were killed and over one lakh have been affected by the flash floods in two districts of Meghalaya’s Garo Hills. According to an official, 52 relief camps have been set up to accommodate those affected in more than 136 villages were inundated by floods in the Brahmaputra and Jingiram rivers, in West Garo Hills district and South West Garo Hills district.
Deputy Commissioner in-charge South West Garo Hills District Magistrate, Ram Kumar said a woman and an infant lost their lives after they fell into the flood waters outside their homes in Fakirpara and Daspara under Mahendraganj. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the flood has disabled the life and livelihoods of people and urged the citizens of the state and the country to come together in support for the affected persons by donating towards the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
”While my government through the various district administrations is doing its best in providing relief measures, we cannot do this alone. Your donation and support as citizens of the state will not only help us rebuild the community but reach out further in aid of our people”, Mr Sangma added.
Disaster and Management Minister Kyrmen Shylla said that floodwaters have shown signs of receding in Phulbari and Rajabala areas in West Garo Hills district. ”We are hopeful that the overall situation will improve in the days to come, and the government has taken immediate steps to help the affected persons in the flooded areas”, Mr Shylla said.
