Amid high opposition from the fans, English clubs Manchester City and Chelsea withdraw from Super League.
On Sunday, the 12 clubs – Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham from the Premier League, plus Italy’s Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan and Spain’s Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid – confirmed that they are joining the European Super League. The announcement of the ESL came just a day before UEFA approved plans to reform the Champions League, including adding an extra four teams to the competition and adopting the ‘Swiss model’ to replace the group stage from 2024.
European Super League – An early Good Bye
Although there has not been any official confirmation yet from the club but it is almost sure that Manchester City have begun the process to withdraw from the European Super League less than 48 hours after confirming their participation in it. Fans all over the globe are excited from the news of Manchester City pulling out of Super League. City have told organisers they no longer want to be part of the £4.6billion scheme.

It is highly anticipated that they are not alone. Reports are suggesting that their Premier League rivals Chelsea withdraws from Super League, as well as La Liga sides Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, are also set to withdraw from the proposals. Efforts to leave come just two days after both were announced as two of six English clubs to sign up to the controversial new competition.
Why Chelsea is withdrawing from European Super League?
Chelsea is set to play Brighton on Monday in Premier League. Chelsea fans have initiated mass protests outside of Stamford Bridge. Hundreds of protesting Chelsea fans have now started to sit down outside Stamford Bridge as they prepare to make their feelings about the ESL clear when they greet the team coaches before their side’s match against Brighton at 8pm BST. Some flares were also let off. The crowd was chanting “it’s not football anymore”. Football fans are very angry from the decision of setting up of European Super League (ESL). The ESL has been widely criticised since being announced on Sunday.
Chelsea and City were part of English football’s ‘big six’ clubs – alongside Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham – to have agreed to join the new league.
