Why Casemiro is not selected in Brazil’s Squad for COPA America 2024 ?
Casemiro had a difficult season at Old Trafford and therefore he was omitted from coach Dorival Jr’s 23-man squad. The new coach had plenty of midfield options in the likes of Bruno Guimaraes (Newcastle), Douglas Luiz (Aston Villa), Andreas Pereira (Fulham), Joao Gomes (Wolves) and Lucas Paqueta (West Ham). Manchester United midfielder Casemiro also missed the friendlies against England and Spain in March due to injury.
Casemiro isn’t the same since his arrival from Real Madrid to Manchester United. In Spain, the Brazilian was a beast on the field. Now at the age of 32, it is quite difficult for him to maintain that same form.
In the last season things were quite different at Manchester. Casemiro was an influential player for the Reds last season. The Brazilian played a crucial role in his club’s campaign as United finished third in the Premier League to qualify for the Champions League. Casemiro also scored in the Carabao Cup final as they beat Newcastle to lift the trophy at Wembley.
Erik Ten Hag played Casemiro at centre-back in recent weeks. It was clearly visible that the 32-year-old Brazilian midfielder was not able to cope with the physicality and intensity of the Premier League. In a few matches, the defensive midfielder was responsible for repeatedly squandering possession in his own half with errant passes, often under no pressure.
Casemiro’s mobility is no longer there. Now he makes too many mistakes and tries to overcompensate. The defensive midfielder was mostly used as a makeshift centre-half because of injuries to regular United defenders.
