England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland compete as separate teams in international soccer tournaments. The four countries combine into ‘Team GB’ during the Summer and Winter Olympics and compete as a unified entity.
Why is England football team not in Olympics ?
The three home nations were worried that releasing their players for Team GB international duty could compromise their position as independent nations within Fifa. Without unanimous backing from all four associations, it was decided that there would be no men’s or women’s football team at Rio 2016. Despite being reassured by ex-FIFA president Sepp Blatter that that wouldn’t happen, only English and Welsh players competed in 2012.
Officially, the team is the “Great Britain and Northern Ireland Olympic Team”. But since 1999, the The British Olympic Association (BOA) has used the brand “Team GB”.
