The selectors of Indian Cricket Team announced the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. A few cricketers failed to get a place in the team. Young explosive batsman Prithvi Shaw didn’t get a place in the Indian squad even after performing good in the domestic cricket. Shaw’s exclusion from the Indian team is quite disappointing because he has been continuously performing well in the domestic cricket as well as in the IPL. Why Prithvi Shaw is not selected in Indian Team for T20 World Cup 2024?
Shaw is considered as a deadly batsman, but he has not been given a chance in any series. He wasn’t included in any of the series that team India played prior to the T20 World Cup. Shaw has performed amazingly in domestic cricket, but still the selectors are not giving him value.
While Shaw is known for his attacking batting style and impressive record in domestic cricket, he has struggled to find consistency in international cricket. In his most recent outings with the Indian team, he had a poor run with the bat and struggled to convert his starts into big scores.
One of the major reason behind Prithvi Shaw’s non selection is the availability of plenty of openers in the Indian Cricket Team. Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul are the first choice openers in all three formats of the game. After these two, Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan have already cemented their places as backup openers. Even after them, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal are there. Prithvi Shaw is not even in the contention list. This means that Shaw has to compete with them for a place in the team and prove his worth with consistent performances.
Finally, there could be other factors such as fitness, attitude, or disciplinary issues that could have played a role in Shaw’s exclusion from the Indian team. He was also not picked in the previous edition of T20 World Cup and the recently concluded Asia Cup.
Shaw is not being repeatedly considered for selection in the senior team becuase his fitness standards aren’t up to the mark. Shaw last played for Team India on the Sri Lanka tour when Shikhar Dhawan led a new-look squad on the tour.
Before the commencement of IPL 2022, the non-Test Indian cricketers attended a fitness camp at the National Cricket Academy. In that camp, Shaw failed to achieve the desired fitness mark. The young batsman failed the yo-yo test as he scored less than 15 in the test. A player has to touch the 16.5 mark in order to pass the test.
