The 8 franchises have confirmed their retention list for the next season. The teams were given deadline of November 30th to submit their retained players list. There have been many shocking big names which have been unable to make into the retention list. One such name is of Indian middle order batsman, Shreyas Iyers. It was already speculated that Iyer will not be retained by Delhi Capitals. Although, it is not clear that it was Shreyas Iyer’s decision or DC management’s decision.
As per the retention rules, each existing franchise was allowed to retain four players – two Indians, two overseas or three Indians, and one overseas. The teams could also retain up to two uncapped players. Each franchise was allowed a 90 crores salary purse.
Delhi Capitals did not retain their former skipper Shreyas Iyer and have decided to go with the quartet of Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw, Axar Patel and Anrich Nortje for the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Delhi Capitals has decided to give Rishabh Pant the leadership role for the next season.

Why Shreyas Iyer is not retained by Delhi Capitals?
The actual reason behind Iyer’s omission from retention is not confirmed. However, it is reported that Shreays Iyer wanted the captaincy of the team but the management decided to go with Rishabh Pant as their captain. In the beginning, Iyer was leading the side ahead of Pant but he suffered a shoulder injury during the home ODI series against England. That injury ruled him out of the first leg of IPL 2021 and in his absence Pant was named the skipper. After recovering, Iyer joined the team ahead of the second leg, in the UAE, but he was not given his captaincy back. Rishabh Pant continued as the skipper and led them to a second successive playoffs appearance.
Now Iyer will go into the auction and there are few teams where Iyer can head to for the 15th season. There are high chances that he might lead a different franchise in IPL in the IPL 2022.
Shreyas Iyer joined Delhi Daredevils back in 2015. He was bought for INR 2.6 crores in the auction pool. Further, he was retained ahead of the 2018 season IPL auction and was given the captaincy just a few days later. Iyer led his team to playoffs in 2019. It was quite special because it was franchise’s first appearance in the knockouts in seven years. Iyer also led Delhi Capitals to the final in 2020 where they were defeated by Mumbai Indians.
Shreyas Iyer was a crucial player for the franchise. Iyer scored heavily for Delhi Capitals at number three for the last 3 seasons. He scored 1916 runs in 86 innings at 31.7 with 16 half-centuries.
